Thyroidectomy for Hyperthyroidism - Who, When and How?

Session Description

This webinar will discuss the management of various causes of hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease and hot nodules.  Areas of consideration will be medical management with anti-thyroid medications and definitive treatments such as radioactive iodine ablation and thyroidectomy.  Evidence-based indications for surgical intervention in the common causes of hyperthyroidism will be reviewed.  Best practices relating to preoperative preparation, Intraoperative tips and tricks and post-operative care will also be included.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, the participate should be able to:

1. Review management options for hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease and hot nodules
2. Discuss the indications for thyroidectomy in hyperthyroidism
3. Review the preoperative preparation, Intraoperative considerations and post-operative care of patients undergoing surgery for hyperthyroidism

Geeta Lal, MD, MSc FRCS(C), FACS.

Dr. Lal is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Iowa, where she serves as Co-Leader of the Endocrine Multi-disciplinary Oncology Group (at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center) and Associate Chief Quality Officer and Director of In-patient Quality and Safety.

Her clinical interest is in endocrine surgery, with a focus in thyroid and parathyroid disease including pediatric thyroid cancer. She was an NIH-funded investigator with an interest in the role of ECM1 in thyroid, breast and other malignancies. She has also authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. She is a member of:

  • The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons
  • The American Thyroid Association
  • The International Association of Endocrine surgeons
  •  and Society of University Surgeons.

  She is also actively involved in the Association for Women Surgeons.
