Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be better able to: 

1.  Discuss and highlight common patterns of disease distribution of Crohn's disease, as well as gross and histologic anatomic characteristics, be able to differentiate Crohn's disease from ulcerative colitis based on microscopic as well as macroscopic characteristics.

2.  Demonstrate competence with diagnostic workup, relevant imaging, serologic markers, and important diseases to exclude in the differential diagnosis of Crohn's disease.

3.  Understand the various medical therapeutic options available for inflammatory bowel disease.

4.   Identify the different options for surgical intervention in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

5.  Understand the indications, contraindications, and complications of creating a pouch with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.

Edwin Itenberg, DO, FACS, FASCRS is a senior staff surgeon in the department of Coln & Rectal Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. His main clinical interests include minimally invasive and robotic treatment of colon and rectal cancer, as well as robotic colostomy reversal. He enjoys practicing all aspects of colon & rectal surgery. He is actively involved in teaching both residents as well as fellows.
